Features such as bandwidth, ram, hard drive(s), phone/email support, hardware replacement, remote boot, addons and upgrades need to be addressed before purchasing a dedicated server plan. If you find a plan that feels right to you but may not meet all your requirements contact the web host. Its definently worth the phone call and they will normally go out of their way to accomodate you.

Compare hosts for price, monthly bandwidth limits (1GB = 1000MB), RAM and the size of a hard drive(s).
Extras / Addons
Web hosts will often have an extras/addons section to their website where you can add to your own dedicated server solution. Things like upgrading your hard drive, operating system and ram should all be available.
Remote Boot
A good Dedicated server will have a remote boot feature. Remote boot basically means just that. Rebooting a dedicated server from a remote location. Often this can be done on both managed and unmanged servers if something goes wrong without having to contact the web host.
Hardware Replacement
If youv'e chosen a dedicated server you deserve to know about hardware replacement. Basically, if something should go wrong with your dedicated server how long will it take to replace parts. If the web host does not advertised this on their website then it is once again worth the phone call. You can't afford to be offline for 3 days waiting for parts to be installed.
